BACKGROUND
Dum Spiro Spero is a zombie outbreak roleplaying (RP) set in the city of Fresno, California, U.S.A. In Dum Spiro Spero, players create a character that act as a person caught up in a quickly spiraling out of control outbreak, responding to situations given to them by the Game Master (GM). Scenarios range from character development to action-oriented and may not always involve the undead.
For this particular RP, unless specified in their character application, the characters do not necessarily know each other and quite possibly may not ever meet each other in the storyline. Each scenario that the character is placed in will be unique and will force the player to sometimes think outside of the box and make decisions, some very hard.
Dum Spiro Spero is a Latin phrase that translates to, "While I breathe, I hope". The goal of Dum Spiro Spero is to push players to the limit and constantly keep them on their toes. All are welcome to join but only the best will be chosen to participate.
Out of character (OOC), players are invited to get to know each other and form bonds. A strictly OOC section is available to all (including non-players) to get to know one another talk about anything.
HISTORY
2001
One week after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, New York, letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to several news media outlets and two Democratic U.S. Senators which resulted in the death of 5 people and the infection of 17 others. A few months after these attacks, the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasure Center (NBACC) is created. The main focus of the NBACC is for the agency to be the principal U.S. biological defense research institution engaged in laboratory-based threat assessments and bioforensics.
2005
In secret, the U.S. government goes against the 1969 ban on researching offensive capabilities and once again begins research on biological weapons, with the NBACC at the forefront. Tests and simulations are planned once a potent biological weapon has been created.
2008
The NBACC begins research into a parasite which will spread from host to host with the ultimate goal of wiping out small populations. As their research gets underway, the NBACC recieves several hundred parasitic specimens to experiment on.
2010
The NBACC successfully creates and codes the Atrophia Contritio (Destructive Atrophy) parasite, a mastigophora protozoa which enters the host body via direct contact with bodily fluids and makes its way to the brain, where it begins to take over the host's motor functions and nervous system. It then focuses solely on spreading itself to a new host until death. However, all the test animals used in the research reject the parasite and die several hours after infection. Humans are deemed necessary in the testing process.
In order to fully test its capability, several inmates from military prisons such as Guantánamo Bay are secretly transported to labs to serve as test subjects; their records being deleted from their respective prisons upon delivery. The first test subjects are infected and within several hours, their conditions change. Their appetites become increasingly intense and periodic abnormalities are recorded within the subects' brain waves. Activity within the test subjects are noted to range from extremely violent to docile as time goes by. As the host's mental state deteriorates and they lose the ability to keep themselves alive, their bodies shut down and both the host and parasite die.
2011
After a year of testing, the NBACC determine that the Atrophia Contritio parasite is exactly what they need in order to use offensively, with a scheduled military use in the Middle East. All that is needed is a simulated and organized field test in order to ensure that the parasite is capable of using its host to effectively eliminate small populations.
2013
The U.S. government approves the NBACC's plan to field test the Atrophia Contritio parasite by releasing a single infected host into a small town and covering the incident up as a terrorist attack to gain public support. Auberry, California is chosen as Ground Zero with a test date for the following year.
2014
Subject Zero is infected and released into Auberry, California. The California National Guard are given orders to deploy; however their mission is kept classified to all but the Command elements. As they deploy, Fresno County, California is effectively quarantined; access leading in and out being completely blocked by the National Guard, who are given orders to use lethal force should civilians get out of hand. As Fresno County is surrounded by the military, Subject Zero begins to wreak havoc within Auberry; killing and infecting around 30 people within the first hour. The infection spreads as people panic and flee to other areas of Fresno County, including the city of Fresno itself. Others that try to leave Fresno County are instead met with the military blockade. The Fresno County Sheriff's Department detachment in Auberry are stretched to the limit and begin asking for assistance from Fresno itself; spreading resources even further. In Fresno, the small amount of infected from Auberry who have migrated into the area are taken over by Atrophia Contritio and begin to slowly turn the population of Fresno.
